PERSONAL.

Mr. Thomas Hodgson, a very old Auckland identity, died suddenly at Frankton on Friday. A cablegram from London states that the Duchess of Connaught continues to make satisfactory progress.

The Right Rev. l)r. Crosaley, Bishop of Auckland, is paying a short visit to Taranaki. While in Taranaki he will celebrate a Maori confirmation service. He is accompanied by the Rev. J. McWilliam, as chaplain. There are rumors of a strong Hawera man coming out for the Patea'electorate next election (says the South Taranaki correspondent of the Wellington Times). It is said he has only to become a starter to upset the present holder of the stakes; The Rev. IT. Martyn Rogers has been appointed to the Anglican Home Mission staff and will be attached to the Taranaki district, with the Rev. Mr. Ilouchen. Mr. Rogers was at Malvern, Canterbury, some years ago, and latterly lias been at Billesden, Leicestershire. Mr. Bernard Maguire, father of the late Police Sergeant Maguire (who was fatally shot at Palmerston North during the Powelka scare), died in Greymouth last week. The deceased was on the coast in the early days, but later resided in Wellington. For the last eighteen months, however, he has been living in Greymouth. Dr. William <l. Mayo, tlie famous iAmerican surgeon, is contemplating a visit to the Dominion early next year. He will take part in the big medical conference which is to be held in Auckland in February next. The visit of the famous surgeon will be particularly interesting to Xew Zealand, as a number of doctors from this country have studied in the surgery of Dr. Mayo and his brother. Tlw; surgery is counted one of the most modern in the world, and many skilful operations have been carried out in it.
