MONTHEY .MEETING. The newly-elected Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) presiding Other hu mbers present were:-Councillors J. Kibbv, F. Jackson, T. Ilealy, A. Clark, A. 11. .Johnstone, W. Amimry, ,1. Clarke, C. Tabor, J. E. Wilson. ,1. T. Mannix, and X. T. Maunder. BOROUGH WORKS. The Town Clerk wrote to the effect that as already intimated verballv, the payments fur labor had been very hcavv for some little time past, and generally in excess of tdie amount which would be available if similar payments were made throughout the year." He had mentioned the matter to the Borough Engineer, and he had inform h\ him (Mr. Bellringer) that he was endeavouring to take advantage of any tine weather to get things in order 'for the winter months. A YOGEETOWN REQUEST. Seventeen residents of YogtJtown petitioned the Council to form a footpath in Shorthand street, and so afford some measure of safety for foot trall'ie. Shorthand street, 'ran the petition, was a very narrow street, and the absence of a footpath involved pedestrians in the risk of being run down by motors or other Vehicles . The petitioners also drew attention to what was possibly the most dangerous cutting in New Plymouth, at the junction of Shorthand street and Yictoria road.—The petition was referred to the Borough Engineer for report. THE TRAMWAYS. In reply to a telegraphed inquiry from the Council as to when the surveyors were starting' work on the tramway route, Mr. H. Black, consulting engineer, to the Council, stated that they had ■been decayed starting owing to the absence of several of the staff at the Territorial camp. He assured the Council that he would see that every possible despatch would be made with the i survey. REPORTS. The report of the Abattoirs Commit- | tee was referred back to the Committee, for further consideration, and the reports of the various other committees I adopted without amendment. • ]
