A London cablegram states that Mr. Asquith and Mt. Churchill have arrived at Venice.
The Hon. It. H. Rhfedes and Sir James Mills went South from Wellington by the Maori last night. A cablegram from London laat night states that the Duchess of Connaught passed a satisfactory day.
Messrs. R. McNab and J. M. Johnston, of Palmerstjbn North, are visiting New Plymouth, in connection with the Mokau Estate.
On inquiry at the Hospital last night, we were informed that the condition of Mr. Harold Street, who was injured by a fall from his horse on Thursday, was improved. A public meeting in Wellington last night decided to present an illuminated address, and a purse of sovereigns to Mr. D. McLaren, the late Mayor, m recognition of his twelve years' service to the city in the City Council and other public positions. The Rev. Father Holbropk, of St. Patrick's Auckland, was at Constantinople on. March 20th. A postcard sent by him to a friend in Auckland states:'—"Most enjoyable trip so far—scarcely a word about any war to be had here—everything perfectly quiet." The death is reported of Mr. J. T. Dalton, one of the earliest settlers in the Pelorus district, where he arrived with his father, n.other and brother during the sixties. The deceased was greatly respected for his many sterling qualities. Ho leaves a widow and a family of three children (two sons and a daughter) to mourn their loss. Mr. John Townley was yesterday reelected unopposed as Chairman of the Gisborne Harbour Board, a position which he hus filled for 23 years in succession, being first elected to the position on December 11, 1890, four years after the Board was constituted. Mr. Townley has occupied a seat on the Board "ever since its inception. • Mr. D. Tomlinson. A.0.5.M., of Otago School of MineH, has been appointed general manager of the Kapsan Mines, Limited, Northern Korea. The appointment is a very important and lucrative, one. For two years prior to his promotion Mr. Tomlinson occupied the position of assistant general manager of the Kapsan Mines, which is a flourishing concern owned in London. Mr. William Timperley, who was found dead in the Westport Coal Company's yard at Palmerston North on Wednesday afternoon, was well known in the Hawke's Bay district. Until about eighteen months ago he was connected with the Wairoa Guardian, of which he was at one time the proprietor. Some months ago he took up his residence at Hastings, and his sudden death came as a shock to his many friends,. jHe leaves a widow and two sons, the eldest of whom, a boy of seventeen years of age, is a student at the Wanganui Collegiate School. The deceased waa fifty-two years of age. Mr. E. 0. Dowling, who is servinjf his apprenticeship with Mr. A. E. Sykes, chemist, has received notice that lie is one of the two successful candidates who sat in Wellington in April for the final examination as a pharmaceutical chemist. Mr. Dowling, who is now eighteen years of age, is the youngest chemist in New Zealand to attain this honour. He began his educationnt the West Fiid School, and from there gained a scholarship which entitled him to free tuition at the New Plymouth High School, where he completed his course. Ho was coached in analytical chemistry by Mr. A. R. Ryder. M.A., of the New Plymouth High School, and in Pharmsicv and Materia Medica by Mr. A. H. Hustwick, manager of Sykes's Pharmaev.
