BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. Following is the Engineer's (Mr. G. Skitrop's) report for the month ending May 7th, to be presented at to-night's meeting of the Council:— Streets.—Seventy-five cubic yards of broken metal have been used in repairing the various streets and roads. 200 cubic yards have been carted into the depots, and approximately 300 cubic yards of boulders have been delivered on the flat above the crusher site. Footpaths.—Thirty-six chains of footpaths have been reformed and twelve covered with gaol gravel. Tarring and Sanding.—Seventy-five chains of tarring and sanding have been done on the following footpaths:—Liardot, Gilbert, King, Queen, Courtenay Streets, Carrington Road and the Marine Esplanade. Waterworks.—The eight inch watermain will be completed to the oil wells to-morrow. Some delay in the laying of this main has been caused through the difficulty'in procuring pipes to replace those broken. Electric Light Tail Race.—Four men are employed at present on this work, and two chains have been completed. The waterworks caretaker reports everything working satisfactorily at the filters. Ten connections have been made this month.. Loan Work.—Gaine Street formation and metalling is now completed and only requires blinding. Molesworth Street formation and metalling is now completed. Leach Street formation is progressing satisfactorily. The metalling from Cameron Street, ten chains on the eastern side of Eliot Street is completed. Sewers.—Octavius Place sewer is completed. Water! Lane sewer is now completed. Pendarves Street sewer is nearly completed between Liardet Street and Cover Street. Fourteen sewer connections have been laid. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER'S REPORT., Powerhouse.—With longer nights and colder weather, the load is steadily in- , creasing, the maximum recorded to date being 205 kilowatts. j The machines have been overhauled. ; The two 45 k.w sets were in good ; order, only requiring ordinary cleaning and adjustment, but the runner of the turbine of the (10 K.W. set having worn | in the same manner as the two previous •runners, has been replaced by the remaining spare wheel. ' I Transmission Line.—Some further repair work has been carried out on this line, only one pole, now remaining to be replaced. Private Lighting.—Poles have been erected in Frankleigh Park in Govett Avenue, Brois and Doralto Road, and four houses connected on this line. Other houses are being wired and will be connected as soon as they are ready. Twenty-three connections were put in during April, making a total of 1000. Street Lighting.—Several new street ■ lamps have been put up during the j month. Some material which is on order is required before this work can be ' completed. ' ABATTOIR REPORT. The Abattoir report is as follows: j Slaughtered for local consumption, during the month:— Cows, 142; bullocks, 43; , calves, 0; sheep, 654; lambs, '79; pigs, 134 and one sucker; goats, 2; tripes cleaned, 1(52 and two ox heels. Compared with the corresponding month of last year they show an increase of 10 cattle, 3 calves, 23 sheep, 2 goats, and 22 tripes, and a decrease of 20 lambs and 7 pigs. Condemned, 0 cows, one bullock 'and nine pigs. There were 4(1 bulls and 19 calves slaughtered for export, an increase of .19 calves and a decrease of 5 cattle. Condemned, 2 bulls. Fees due for the month amount to £133 14s; rents, £3 5s 0d; extraordinary traffic fees I received, 3s fld; total £137 "3s. As the weather has turned so cold, I have closed down the chiller for the season, j The Committee recommends that the agreement with Messrs. Sole Bros for j the disposal of offal and condemned meat j at the Abattoirs, for a period of five j years with right of renewal, for a fur- j ther term, be approved/and Crs. Kibby j and Ilcaly be appointed to sign the agreement and to affix the Borough Seal thereto. WORKS' COMMITTEE REPORT. The Works Committee reported:— .•That the arrangement made with Mr. W. J. Russell with reference to supply of gaol gravel as set out in the letter of ; the 10th April from.Mr.- A. H. John-] stone be confirmed ;that the Govern- j ment Valuation Department be asked whether it could supply before the end of December next a revised valuation for the Borough as now constituted, and on what terms; that the application of the Taranaki Producers' Freezing j Works Company for a 3-inch rater ser- : vice b ( e granted provided the consent of the Railway Department can be obtained to the main being laid under the railway, the Company to instal an approved water meter and' to pay for the water at the rates from time to time fixed by the Council for supplies by meter; that the Borough Engineer be authorised to extend the sewers in Wallace Place' a distance of approximately 8 chains at an estimated cost of £4O; that the Borough Engineer be authorised to lay down kerbing and channelling on the western side of Morley Street between Gaine, Street and Devon Street, but that before the work is proceeded wilh he be instructed to ascertain from the Consulting Engineer fur the Tramways whether any alterations in the grade of Devon Street will be required at its intersection with Morley Street; that Mr. J. C. Davies be informed that the, Council cannot see its way to accede to his application for access to his sections in Moulton Street; that, the Borough Engineer be authorised to form anil ashphalt at its permanent level the footpath in Currie Street on the western side from Devon Street to Courtenay Street (estimated cost, £3 per chain)"; that a rubbish tip for the winter months be established at the Council's section, corner of Morlev Street and Gaine Street, and that the tip in Hobson Street be closed for the time being; that the Harbour Board be informed that sit 'the expiration of the six months' extension of time previously granted, the stables at the comer of Gill and Currie Street mint be connected with the sewers; that the Sanitary Inspector he instructed to give to the nightsoil contractor three days'notice as provided by paragraph 25 of the specifications that the penalty clauses of the contract will be enforced unless the work is carried out in a more satisfactory manner; that the Borough Engineer be instructed to report upon the nucstion of a more satisfactory method of dealing with rubbish and "garbage; that final notices to connect with the sewers be forwarded to the persons mentioned in the .Borough Inspector's letter of the 7th inst.; that the Borough Engineer he authorised . to continue the treatment of Currie Street with Sol tar preparation to the goods shed gate, the footpath to be tarred and sanded at the same time. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTE. The Electric Light Committee report is as follows: That the Electrical Engineer be authorised to have as comprehensive a display of electrical cooking and other appliances at the Winter Show as is possible in the limited time at his disposal; that the resignation of the Substation Clerk and Meter Reader, Mr. C. P. Rogers, as from the 31st inst., be accepted, and that he be granted two weeks' leave on pay as from the 17th inst.: that the tender of the National Elcctvicul and Engineering Comply for

the supply of one 350 K.V.A. transformer (general electric make) for the sum of £3Ol be accepted; that consideration of the Borough Engineer's report with reference to increasing the- head of water at the intake be deferred until the Committee have visited the intake.
