DESERTERS.
TAXING THE NEW ZEALAND. By Telegraph—L'ress Association. Auckland, Last night. Ten men were reported to be missing from the battleship New Zealand when she left Auckland on Saturday. An important statement on the subject was made by the Hon. Mr. Herdman to-day. He said the information in his possession made it clear that members of the ship's company were enticed to desert the service by some employers of labour under the promise of high wages, The liberty the men were given in plain clothes enabled them to desert. Mr. Herdman stated that he knew of instances where men were tempted to desert, and later repented their decision, but had a difficulty in returning. Liquor had also been taken on board and given to the men by visitors. He quoted sections of the Naval Discipline Act, 1860, operative in New Zealand, imposing a penalty of £3O for assisting men to desert from the service.
