A BETTING SCHEME. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, May 9. The scheme for betting on football matches, cabled on April 30, failed. So alluring were the odds in certain instances that backers rushed them, leaving alone prices which the promoter had designedly fixed in order to keep -him ahead. Successful tipsters were informed that the bank was broken, and though one should have won £4O, and several £2O, no one received even his stake back, The cablegram referred to was as follows:—Systematic betting on football matches is being introduced in. Victoria;. Circulars are issued giving directions to persons wishing to bet. The odds laid range from three to one to those selecting two winnings teams playing off their, own grounds, to a hundred to one to those selecting the winners of two home matches, five away matches, and one drawn game in the one afternoon. The name of the promoter of the scheme has not been disclosed, but it is understood that this betting system was launched in Sydney. Certain people in Melbourne have been asked to become agents here for it.

August 30.—Against Australia, at New Plymouth. September 4.—Against Auckland, at New Plymouth. It is possible a match may be arranged with the Maori team in July at New Plymouth on their return from Australia, and with the Hawke's Bay team i at New Plymouth during the Winter Show Week.
