King David of Uganda is making a three months' tour in England. At a meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board lust night, Mr. J. B. Murray was re-elected chairman. The Rev. G. H. Balfour, of First Church, Dunedin, lias been elected Moderator of the Dunedin Presbytery. A cablegram announces the death of the Dowager Duchess of Newcastle, who was the wife of the sixth duke. A cablegram announces that the Duchess of Connaught passed a fair night, and her strength is maintained. Dr. Wilbur Chapman and Mrs Chapman, together with Mr. C. Alexander, leave Auckland for Vancouver by the Niagara to-day. Steps are to be taken to recognise the worth of the services tendered to the Wellington public'by Mr. D. McLaren during the past twelve years. Mr. F. B. Glasgow, of the Union. Bank of Australia, Feilding, has been transferred to the Rangiora branch. He will be succeeded by Mr. John McQueen, of Gore. At Waitara on Wednesday, Mr. Jas. George was farewelled bv his friends, and presented with a smoker's outfit. Mr. George is removing to Auckland for health reasons. Mr. C. J. Hickson, commercial instructor at the Napier Technical- College, has been appointed to a similar position at the Seddon Memorial Technical School, Auckland. ; ,' : ; , . Mr. William Malone, a Crimean veteran, aged 70, died at the Waikato Hospital on Monday night. He had th» Crimean medal with three clasps—lnkerman, Sebastopol, and Balaclava—also the Egyptian and New Zealand war •medals. • Information has been received from the Trinity College, London, that Miss Clara Old, pupil of the local Convent, has been successful in obtaining a "Local Exhibition" (valued at six guineas) for senior theory, Miss Old obtaining 10ft marks, the maximum. Another old pioneer, Mr. Charle* Autridge Bullot passed away at hi* residence, Brougham Street, ' early yesterday evening at the good old age of 71 years. Deceased, who was born in New Plymouth, saw active service in the Maori war. he being a sergeant in the mounted force. The interment will take place at the Te Renui cemetery to-morrow afternoon.
In January, 1014, General \Sir Tali Hamilton, Inspector-General of the Oversea Forces, will leave the Mediterran* ean and visit New Zealand and Australia. He is going out at the inviV tation of the Governments of those countries for the express purpose of inspecting their military forces. During' the summer of the present year, General Hamilton will go to Canada, at the invitation of the Dominion Government, to inspect the Canadian military forces. An old colonist in the person of Mrs. John Shaw died at a private hospital at Grey Lynn, after, a long illness at the age of seventy-eiglit Thedeceased arrived in Auckland in 1866, accompanied by her husband, Mr. Jas* Slade. In 1861 hej husband died, leaving her a widow with three boys.. In 'Mill' she married Mr. John Shaw, who survives her. They settled qn the land at Flat Bush, and were driven from
their home by the Maoris during theWaikato war. They returned, to the land at the close of the war, and for a number of yfears were fruitgrowingat Waikumete. The > deceased thirteen children, sixty-nine granclchiUlrcn, and twenty-one great-grandchildren. The death is reported from Dunedin • of ,M!r. .James) >Cable. The deceased came out from Forfar, Scotland, in 18(54, and was the first of the family t» arrive in this country. Deceased engaged in farming pursuits in the Clutha district for a few yeartj but in. 1870 he removed to Dunedin; and went into-, business as a grain merchant and' pro- i duce exporter. He was always active ■ in church and Sunday school work, and, was a business man of the strictest inn tegrity. He leaves a Widow, four sons f and three daughters. Of the sons, Mr., Joseph Cable is a chief engineer in .the-' Union Company's service and president', of the New Zealand Marine Engineers"' : Institute; Mr. Matthew Cable is the 1 Wellington tramways official mentioned*"; above; Mr. James Cable is an engineer ! attached to the local staff of the Union ' Company, and Mr. John Cable is a minister of the Methodist Church in South Australia.
