PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Parihaka Road Board was held at the Board's office, Rahotu, on Thursday, when there were present: Messrs. Jas. Young, J. F. Phillips and Thos. Harvey. The Returning Officer notified the result of the general election which had just been held. He then called for nominations for ebairinan',' and* Mr.' young was re-elected, on the mfltion of Messrs. TV Harvey and J.'F. Phillips. Mr. Jas. Young, in returning thanks, stated that as in the past he would continue to do his best in the interests of the ratepayers. He welcomed Mr. J. F. Phillips, the new member, to the Board. Reverting to the finances, he stated that they were at present £O6 in credit, and with a lialfpeny rate endeavored to keep all the roads open. He emphasised the fact that road accounts were kept to show the state of each road. Some of these were considerably overdrawn, but they always endeavored to so arrange their expenditure that no road should lie more than two years' rates overdrawn. Tt was, he considered, the duty of member's to safeguard the ratepayers. Messrs. J. F. Phillips, Harvey and the Chairman were appointed to sign cheques. The ballot for members to retire at the end of the year resulted in the representatives of the Opua, Opunake, and Warea wards having to retire at the end of the year.

FOREMEN'S REPORT. Mr. J. P. Kennedy (foreman) reported that thirteen chains of formation and metalling had been completed on the Bayley Road. Repairs to the Upper Kahui Road had been completed from Stonex's Hill almost to the bottom. Boulders had been taken out and broken down and gravel put on. All the roughest parts had been attended to, and the work was now completed as far as the money granted would allow. One hundred and twelve chains of the Opua Road drain had been cleaned out by Mr. Or Gross. Repairs to this road would be commenced shortly. The Cape Road hod been repaired . .with gravel and ■Jraulders. taken out by Mr. Fleming. The £i 10s due by the Egmont County had also been spent on the road. Repairs to the Rahotu Road were being gone on with, and the Lower Kina Road would be commenced in a few days. Boulder stone on the Lower Arawhata Road had been broken, and would Jbe put on the road as soon as possible. He had purchased o ton of .chuff 'at £4 10s per ton, and 1!) sacks of oats a.t 3s 4d per bushel. During the mouth fifteen twelve-inch pipes had been sold.

OPOUAPA ROAD. Messrs. C, Penwarden and K. H. Symojis waited on the Board, and asked for repairs to the Opouapa Road, the former asking that the repairs should be done generally to the metalled portion, t and the latter specially to the unmetalled portion. It was resolved to spend the £l2 which the road is in credit to 1 repair the metal, and the foreman was also instructed to report on what was necessary to.repair the unmetallcd portion and the cost, and also to ascertain what the settlers interested were prepared to contribute towards the cost. The accounts between the Kahu and Opouapa Roads were gone into, and, as a result, it was disovered that the rates from some sections abutting on both roads were wholly credited to the Ka- ' liui Road.- It was resolved that these be credited equally to each road. The Opouapa Road will,be credited with an additional £0 per annum, and the Kahui with that amount less. GENERAL. The Government forwarded the usual circular re grants required for roads, etc. It was Tesolyed to ask for a grant of £KiO for forming and metalling about half a mile of the Cape Road on which there is a Government lighthouse. In response to a query, the clerk stated that the native rates were only coming in up to the average. There was a good amount outstanding. Accounts amounting to £242 were passed for payment.
