In returning thanks, the chairman characterised as very pleasing and satisfactory that the trade of the port of Wellington for the six months ended March 31 showed substantial increases in nearly- all items, as compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. The figures were:— Cargo outwards:— . 1912 1913. Tons. Tons. .. "'' ' intercolonial ports 02,005 .63,150 Grbss total general ' cargo inward, outward any trah- '''>. ' shipped 342,451 360,808, Commenting on the figures, the eluir. man said,,that, tlie general, cargo transhipments constituted a record. The large increase in the' amount of Government coal passing over the wharves free of charge required attention, and the sooner the Board could get the Goveriir ment to pay something on its coal the better it Avould be for all concerned. He suggested that if no satisfaction could be obtained, a deputation should wait on the Prime Minister.
