TWO DAYS ON A REEF.
SHIPWRECKED PASSENGERS FOUND FROZEN TO DEATH. .
The enquiry into the wreck of the Britisli steamer Calvados in the Sea of Marmora on March 2 revealed terrible experiences endured by some of the 200 passengers.
A panic broke, out among the passenJ gers, who were mostly on deck, and some jumped overboard, while others were washed away by the heavy seas. The boatswain, carrying a line, managed to reach the rocks, and, the rppe having been made fast, a number of passengers were able to get' on to the reef by its aid. This reef was separated from the main island by a channel two or three hundred yards across. At daybreak a small boat from the lighthouse came to the rescue, and was able to ferry all the crew and most of the passengers to the larger island. The heavy sea prevented this operation from being completed, and twenty-seven passengers, including four women and two children, were left on the exposed rock for two days. When help came it was found that seven men had been frozen to death.
