OPUNAKE NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent)
Mr. Cave, bridge contractor, of Elthain, who has been engaged effecting repairs to the Opunake wharf, met with a painful accident last week. While lie was cutting a thick plank through out on a structure, it broke quicker than was expected, with the result that the plank fell into the sea (a distance of about 20 feet), Mr. Cave falling behind it, landing on the plank across the small of his back. Mr. Cave's son and another assistant immediately lowered a rope, but he was too much knocked out to hang on to it. The son then quickly went down, and although they had great trouble in getting him to the top they eventually managed it. Dr. Barron was quickly summoned, and did all possible to relieve the sufferer. On examination, it was found that Mr. Cave had received a broken rib, which was sticking on the lungs, and a few other ribs were injured. He was taken by motor car to a private hospital in Eltliam, and, according to latest accounts, we are all pleased to hear that Mr. Cave is progressing as favorably as can be possibly expected. Opunake railway.—l hear from good authority that the surveyors are as far as Matapu now with their work. How many more times are the Government going to survey this route? It will before very long very near cost the country as much to have this surveyed as what it would cost to build the line. The settlers of this disirict do not care which 1 way the line comes as long as they get it, but they do object to all this humbug of surveying over and over again. Why, anybody would think it was the centre of South Africa they had to construct the line through! However, to have the excuse of waiting for the engineers' report comes in' very handy where the Government wants to spend its funds elsewhere. The Opunake Football Club, both juniors and seniors, are in excellent form this season. The first match will be played on Saturday at Opunake against Okaiawa. We are looking forward to this match with interest, and if the weather is favorable there will be a record attendance in the Domain on Saturday.
