When the monthly clean-up was being made at the Bullfinch mine two watch- ', men, Gate and Cassey, were locked in ; the smelting ' room while engaged in-' smelting. Cassey went out to ask a third man, Sheldon, to bring some tea. When Cassey relumed and opened the door two armed'and masked men appeared, bailed him up, and gagged and' bound the watchmen. Soon Sheldon came in with the tea. and he was similarly treated. The robbers promptly secured about 898 ounces of gold, valued at over £3OOO. Cassey managed to free himself shortly after the robbers left, and gave the "alarm to the police, who found a number of gags and some bags • which the robbers, had worn, oyer their heads. Gale states that Sheldon refused to hold up his hands, and slewed .fight. The robbers thereupon tripped', him up i and bound him, keeping them all covered with revolvers. The Tobbers' •smashed , the electric light globes to prevent their operations.being seen. They then drew trays from the retort fnrhaces. and threw water on the gold to cool it.
