MUNICIPAL POLLS
KEEN" INTEREST DISPLAYED. MR. BROWNE RE-ELECTED MAYOR. There was unwonted hustle in the town yesterday on the occasion of the municipal elections, involving contests for the Mayoralty, Councillorships, and three seats on the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Interest mainly centred in the struggle for the Mayoralty, which was fought out between the sitting Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) and Mr. J. S. S. Medley, who had the official support of the Labor Party and made rating on unimproved values one of the strong planks of his platform. In view of the large amount of loan money which will he in the hands of the Council for expenditure on electric trams, water extension and street improvement purposes, ratepayers displayed a lively interest in the contest. Every available motor-car was in use and numerous cabs and other vehicles were pressed into service. It speaks well for the enthusiasm of Greater New Plymouth that out of a total of some 4,200 elsctors, 2149 exercised their franchise. The result was decisive, Mr. Browne securing a majority of 509 over his opponent. Mr. Browne established a lead (it all the important booths, being in the minority at only Moturoa, Westown. and St. Aubyn Gymnasium. Vogeltown. the suburb in which he resides, plumped for Mr. Browne to the tune of 70 votes to f). Mr. P. T. Bellringcr was' returning officer, and the polling arrangements went off without a hitch. 1350 781 18 Majority for Browne 569. Last year saw the same two candidates in the field, Mr. Browne defeating Mr. Medley bv 704 votes to 639. SPEECHES BY THE CANDIDATES. Rising to speak Mr. Browne was greeted with loud applause. In briefly returning thanks, the Mayor expressed his deep appreciation at this, a renewed expression of confidence in his adminis-j tratorship on the part of the electors.' Looking ahead he stated that it was his j intention to immediately push on the tramway scheme. Everything was now in order and he anticipated that within j a week the scheme would be initiated by the surveyors commencing their work. Touching upon his candidature for the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, he said that he considered it only a right and proper thing that in view of its heavy contributions to the Board's funds the Council should have direct representation on that body. He assured the 1 electors that he would '."return the town" to them next year as clean as he had left it at the close of last year's administration. * ,
Mr. Medley, the defeated candidate, i 7 thanked those electors who had voted for him, and said he was sorry to real- c ise that he had been "done Brown." ° (Laughter). "No harm," he added, 'has ? been done, and I hope our old friend, 11 will come up to the scratch many times e more. I am scratched on this occas-J ion. My only aim in standing was for the progress of the town, and I shall. 3 continue to do everything in my power '• towards that end. I have failed, but I have put up a good fight, and I am pleased to say that the contest has.been devoid of personalities and has been I quite a friendly one." (Applause). Mr. Browne then called for three cheers for his opponent, and the re- c. sponse was hearty. j) _ i COUNCILLORS. Fourteen candidates wont to the poll ] in the election for Councillors. He also wishes us to state that he has been suddenly called away from town. and is unable to personally thank his many helpers yesterday. Elsewhere the Mayor-elect (Mr. O. AY. Browne) returns thanks to ratepayers for their renewed confidence in him.
STRATFORD. By Telegraph,—Own Reporter. Stratford, Last Night. The municipal elections at Stratford attracted considerable attention, and tie mult was as follows: N.J.King 420 J..H. Thompson 411 J. B. Of these nine Messrs. Richards, Arden and Frederic all stood for the first time. ' The polling for two members of the - . Hospital and Charitable Aid Board resulted:—J. McAllister 352, C. D. Sole 308, J. H. Thompson 244. The first two ' < were elected. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. I For the Mayoralty, Mr. J. P. Luke polled 9994 votes, and Mr. D. McLaren 9480, a majority for Mr. Luke of 508. WESTPORT. There was a record polling at the elections to-day. Results:—Mayoralty: A. Leaver (elected) 1045, T. Q. O'Brien 043, T. Samuel 300. Messrs. Munro and Scanlon were elected to the Harbor - Board. BLENHEIM. For the Mayoralty, Cr. E. S. Parker (837) defeated the sitting Mayor. Mr. J. J. Corry (791). GISBORNE. Mr. James Robert Kirk, solicitor, for- • merly of Naseby, was elected Mayor of Gisborne. The figures were;— Kirk 960, Dr. Collins 845, John Sheridan 523. FOXTON. There was keen interest evinced in the election for the Mayoralty. The results were: (!. H. Stiles 529, .1. L. Harvey 109. TAIHAPE. The Mayoral election resulted: Mr. D. McLennan 409, Mr. 11. D. Bennett 203. PALMERSTON NORTH. The complete returns are not yet in, but it is certain that the Wednesday half-holiday will, be carried. Messrs. M. Cohen and John Cobbe have been returned as members of the Wellington Harbor Board. The Mayor, Mr. J. A. Nash, was re-eleeted unopposed. MASTERTON. The Borough Council elections were keenly contested between the Labor and Commercial interests. Only one straightout Labor candidate was returned, and he was a retiring councillor. The councillors elected were: Messrs. A. E. Winzenberg, R. J. King, F. W. Temple, G. ' W. Sellar, W. Keraball, J. Candy, J. C. Ewington, E. Flanagan, and H. J. O'Leary. MORNINGTOX. In Morning Mr. S. Thompson 1121. In the Harbor Board election for three members representing the Napier borough, Mr. J. A r . Browne polled 2278, Mr. J. J. Niven 1924, Mr. F. AV. Williams 1855. Mr. AY. J. McGratb 1854, Hon. J. D. Ormond 1817, Mr. H. J. Holder 1789, and Mr. D. McGrath, jun., 380. Messrs. Browne, Ormond and Holder advocated the completion of the breakwater and the harbor. Messrs. , Niven, AVilliarhs' and AV.' J. McGrath advocated the construction of an inner harbor to admit vessels of deep draught. The election excited a good deal of interest, owing to the rival tickets. DUNEDIN. The Mayoral election resulted:—Mr. Stewart 5527, Mr. Belcher 4368, Mr. Shacklock 3093.
