Giving evidence before the Empire , Trade Commission, Mr. Oxenham, secretary of the Postal Department, said he was in favor of State-owned Atlantic ! cables, so that the Pacific Cubic Board would have full control of the traffic j between the United Kingdom and Aus- | ■ tralia, and be in a position to provide ■ the cheapest, speediest and most efficient service possible in the circumstances. He suggested that the ordinary cable rates should be reduced to -2s a. word, press - messages to Od, deferred cables to Is, and week-end cables to (id a word. He considered the present scanty press ' cables would be considerably increased " if the rates were reduced.
