FARMERS AT LAW.' j An involved civil dispute was heard.in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when Paul Jenkins sued Stanley Smith. Mr. Hughes appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Grey for the defendant. This- was. a claim for £4!) 18s fld, balance of. account. The parties hud been neighbors on the Mangorei Road. The evidence showed that in January 1012 Jenkins i asked Smith to buy for him soma dairy 1 cows, and offered security. Smith.agreed I and bought them. Shortly after Smith suggested that instead of'his advancing the money Jenkins should borrow £l2u from the Mortgage and Agency Co., and he (Smith) would guarantee payment. This was done. In July Smith, with the knowledge of the company,. bought, tern of the mortgaged cows. This.. I'ed to some confusion which was increased by numerous other transactions between the parties. The hearing of the case continued until nearly 4 p.m., when/ at the suggestion of the Magistrate the ease was adjourned for half an hour to permit the parties and their solicitors to compare accounts and come to a settle-, ment. When the Court resumed Mr. Hughes announced that a settlement had 'been reached, the defendant's liability I having being fixed at £29 18s ; 7tf, ini elusive of costs. UNDEFENDED CASES. Judgment hy default was given in the following undefended cases:—Joll v. Henare fcoti, claim £4 3s sd, costs lis; Smart Bros. (Mr. G. Grey) v. J. F. Hooker, claim £ls 14s (Id (£T 10s fld). Judgment summons: I. Aroa (Mr. D. Hutchen) v. T. C'hristion. Judgment creditor, a farm labourer earning 31s per week, said, he paid his accounts monthly till the last month before he went to Hawera, with his wife and six children. He had no stock, of his own. His Worship made no. order.
