I ALLEGED SUICIDE. J Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. A man named R-. Irving Johnston, ap- , parently between 35 and 40 years of age, I is supposed to have committed suicide [ in the Gladstone Hotel this afternoon. His body was found on his bed with a deep wound in the throat and a razor lying alongside. Deceased arrived at the hotel on Tuesday, and said that he might stay for a few weeks. He is said to have been somewhat eccentric in his actions and sayings. He did not have his meals in hotels and drank very little. Articles in his possession indicate that at one time he followed the occupation of a commercial traveller. CRUSHED FINGERS. Whangarei, Last Night. A. 11. Clarke, while working a planing machine at Foster's timber yard this momnig got his left hand caught in the cog-wheels of the machine. One finger had to be amputated, and he may lose the others as they were terribly crushed. A FISHERMAN'S END. Tnvcrcargill, Last Night. John Stirling, Stewart Island, to-day conveyed to Half-Moon Bay in a boat the body of John Marshall, which he had found in the latter's dinghy ab'out eight miles from Half-Moon Ba(v. The dinghy was full of water and the oars and rowlocks were gone. Tt is supposed that during a squall on Monday night the deceased was fishing and the dinghy capsized, Marshall afterwards righting her, but the exertion was too much for him and death ensued. The deceased, who was 01 years of age, had lived alone in a hht at Horse Shoe JBay. DEATH OF AN UNKNOWN MAN. Invercargill, Last Night. A fatal accident occurred at Hedgehope on Monday'afternoon. A young man, aged 23 years, was working in a gravel pit for Mr. McEachern, when a fall of earth came down suddenly. The deceased was jambed by the fall against i a dray and death was instantaneous, his skull being fractured and his neck - broken. He was only known in the local- { ity as "Sandy." and was said to have I liailcd from the Gore district.
