FORESTRY COMMISSION.
VISIT TO NEW PLYMOUTH.
The members of the Roval Forestry ) Commission arrived in town last night • and a representative of this paper inter- >■ viewed the chairman, Mr. H. D M Has- •' »rd on the subject of the 'past and : i future work of the Commission. The. ' ' object of the Commission is to ascertain ;<' in what manner the areas of land within ': the Dominion should bo dealt with, and -< ; to what extent the existing afforestation operations of the Government are sufficient to satisfy the future demand for timber in New Zealand, and how far • such operations should be extended. The members arrived, some from Auckland via Te Kuiti, and others via Taumaranuj and the Wanganui River. To date 4400 ' miles have been covered in inspecting forest and scenic reserves and Government plantations, at Papanui, Hanmer. Jtotorua, Waiotapu and Poipoi, and also in viewing areas wftich are considered suitable for afforestation operations Today the party propose visiting several aoemc and other reserves in the country '« surrounding New Plymouth. To-morrow " it 10 a.m. a public meeting will be held '■* in the Town Hall.
