The Government, learning of projected 3 Monarchist, extreme Republican, and Syndicalist disturbances, ordered pre--1 cautions. A hundred demonstrators, in- > eluding many soldiers describing them- - selves as Radical Republicans, tried ins effectually to persuade the Engineers to i leave the barracks. The demonstrators ' then proceeded to the Radical Republi- • can Federation headquarters and re- ! ceived leather bags containing bombs. ; The police and Republican guards dispersed the mob. They effected arrests and seized from the Federation officers a quantity of amis and also badges intended for rebels. About 175 prisoners were taken, including a dozen military and naval officers and a hundred soldiers. Four dynamite bombs were found in the infantry barracks. The, majority of those arrested are members of the Federation, inclnding a retired general, Guedes, its president. Two bombs were exploded in the Alcantara suburb. , The troops are confined to barracks'. The carabonerie are keeping watch over them: A cruiser will convey those arrested to the colonies where they will be tried. ■ ■.===; '..
