Bell) is not in favor of corporal punishment for serious offences. SALE OF HEREFORD CATTLE. ,- : -•• Wanganui, Last Night. Une of. the largest dispersal sales ever held in New Zealand commenced at Wanganui to-day,, when Mr. Frank Moore, of Bushy Farm, Kai Iwi, offered at auction his famous herd of three hundred stud and one hundred and twenty grade Hereford cattle. Buyers from Australia and from all parts of New Zealand, including f ara.na.ki, Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, and Auckland were in attendance. To-day one hundred and fifty pedigree cows and calves were disposed of. Bidding was spirited and prices arranged from '2O guineas to 120 guineas. •The Ensign cow, Leopora 58th,. brought! tne top price, being knocked down to' Mr. 11. M. Campbell, M.C., at 120 guineas, A BOOKMAKER FINT^D. Ashburton, Last Night At the Methven Police Court to-day, before Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., Peter Cleary, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of betting on the Methven course on New \ ear's Day, was fined twenty pounds. CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH CONFERENCE. Wellington, Last^Night. The Congregational Church Conference has been sitting in Wellingtori under the presidency of the Hon. 0. Fowlds. The object of the meeting was to prepare a scheme for church extension in New Zealand. It is proposed to raise a fund of £IO,OOO during the next five years. A portion of the fund will be set apart to provide bursaries for students for the ministry, and the balance will be used for church- extension and evangelistic work. Representatives from Otago, Canterbury, Auckland and Wellington were present. Two contributions of £IOOO each have been received and several others of £SOO each are' reported to be in sight.
! GOVERNMENTAL RETURNS. ! Wellington, Last Night. I ! For the quarter ended March 31st, the Post and Telegraph revenue for the Dominion was £316,495, compared with £263,797 iu (lie corresponding period of 1912. The fiovernment Savings Banks deposits during the quarter ended March 31st totalled £2,717.944, against £3,117,464 in the corresponding quarter of 1912. The withdrawals were respectively £2,775,035 and £2,921,674. There was an excess of withdrawals over deposits amounting to £57,091 in the quarter just ended, compared with the excess of deposits over withdrawals totalling £195,789 in the March quarter of last year.
