Stent,'M.A., suc-ceeds-Rev.' W. Klindgende rin the Opunake parochial district. Mr. M. J. Jones, of Te Kuiti, who has been'on a brief visit to New Plymouth, returns by mail train to-day. A London cablegram announces the death of Mr. John Saxelev, aged 01. He invented the railway interlocking svstem. * Mr. Ernest Davies, a well-known chemist and optician, of Wanganui, is commencing business shortly in New Plymouth. , A cablegram from London states that the municipality of Falmouth entertained Sir Joseph Ward, who afterwards opened the Flower Show. The condition of Archbishop Clarke, of Melbourne, who is suffering from bronchitis, following an attack of pneumonia, is unchanged, but he is not yet out of danger. The death occurred at Lepperton yes- , t&*4ay morning, of Mr. Thomas Harold, a well-known farmer. Mr. Harold' had been ill only a fortnight, but recently the trouble turned to brain fever.
Yesterday morning the trustees of the New Plymouth Savings Bank met at the Club to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Weston, who are leaving for Wellington next week, en route to England. Mr. W. L. Newman, who has been appointed deputy vice-president during Mr. Weston's absence and Mr. R. Cock, trustee, referred to Mr. Weston's long connection with the institution as vice- j president, and expressed the hope that his trip abroad would prove enjoyable. Mr, s Melton, in reply, thanked his colleagues for their kind expressions, and 5 said that the Savings Bank was the only public institution with which he was now connected. He also took advantage of the opportunity of welcoming Messrs. G. W. Browne and N. King, who have recently been appointed trustees of the bank.
Dr. David, headmaster of Rugby, acting on behalf of the Board of Governors and the headmaster of Christ's College, has chosen the Rev. G. S. Byran-Brown, M.A., as chaplain. Mr. Byran-Brown has been chaplain and assistant-master at Trinity College, Glenalmond, for the last five yeirs. He was educated at Tunbridge and Downing College, Cambridge, of which he was a classical exhibitioner. He was in his school fifteen and eleven, played for the seniors at Cambridge both in cricket and* football; and fepresented the university at hockey. Dr. David says: "It would take us a very long time to find a man more exactly suited to the essentials of the work you have for him." Mr. Bryan-Brown is only 27 years of age, and his brilliant athletic qualifications will make him doubly welcome to Christ's College, says a Christchurch correspondent. We regret to have to chronicle the death of Mr. Percy Ambury, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Ambury, of Devon street, which occurred at Du'nedin yesterday, at the early age of 22. Deceased, who was educated at the local High School, was an enthusiastic woiker in connection with the Baptist Church in New Plymouth. This work he continued on his removal to Auckland, some . two or three years ago. Mueli sympathy will be felt for Mr. and Mrs. Ambury in their sad bereavement. A Melbourne cablegram states that Mr. G. Castles, chief clerk in the At-torney-General's department, will succeed Mr. Powrs as Federal Crown solicitor.
