OUR DREADNOUGHT

INTERCHANGE OF COMPLIMENTS. Per Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. H.M.S. New Zealand left Wellington shortly after 8 o'clock this morning for Napier. On the trip the warship -will indulge in torpedo running and gun practice. Before leaving Wellington, Captain Ilalsey sent a letter to the Hon. Mr. Bell, expressing thanks for the way the officers and men had been received and looked after in Wellington, and for the systematic and thorough manner in which everything had been organised. He also greatly appreciated the patient and courteous behaviour of the general public on board the ship. The Hon. Mr, Hell also sent a letter to Captain Halscy 011 behalf of the Government. "Our thanks," said Mr. Bell, •'are due to the men for the example tliey have afforded the people of .the. Dominion by their conduct during tile stay of the battle cruiser in Wellington of the eflect of the training and discipline in IJis Majesty's service." There had been 110 breath of order and no trouble to mar the pleasure of citizens. SOU VEX Hi OF TDK VISIT. Christcliureh, I'.a-t Night. A suggestion contained in a recent ' article in the Press, that the various centres of New Zealand should combine together to raise a substantial sum, to provide a worthy and permanent presentation from the people of the Dominion to their battleship, such for example, as a complete set of plate or gunnery shield was brought under notice of the . Mayor of Christcliureh to-day. Mr. Holland replied that already an effort was being made to raise £2OO from the citizens in each of the four principal centres foi the purpose of milking u, joint presentation that would give a total of £BOO and with contributions from the smaller centres, a sum of fIOOO at least should lie raised. The movement ha.J his entire sympathy, and as it was essentially a citizens affair, he would be only too glad to do what he could to further tbe scheme. As far as Christchurch was concerned, he thought therewould be no dillieulty at all in raising' the contribution required. The presentation proposed would form a very fine reminder to the present crew of the New Zealand of their visit to the Dominion", and as far as the subsequent crews wenconcerned would keep before them the name of the country which gave tbo slip. 5
