j A SUCCESSFUL FLIGHT. I " WIZARD " STONE MAKES A DEBUT | AT AUCKLAND. j HEIGHT OF FIFTY FEET ATTAINED. Auckland, April 21. A crowd of nearly 20,000 people gathered on the Domain cricket ground, and another four or five thousand on the other Domain on Saturday, in anticipation of viewing the first flight in New Zealand by an experienced aviator. The exhibitionist was "Wizard" Stone, an air showman from the United States, and his promoters had announced that he would make a flight in his Bleriot machine. After much trouble in controlling the' crowd which swarmed around the monoplane tent as bees around a hive, a flight of about a third of a mile at a maximum height of fifty feet was made. The machine was then returned to its canvas quarters, and although some thousands of people hovered round for some time, making occasional vocal demonstrations, nothing more was attempted with the monoplane. A quarter past three was the time advertised for the fight, but when it arrived the 30 x 30 tent in the north-west corner of the grounds was so besieged by curious watchers that Mr. I Stone and his stuff declined to fly unless given a clear run. The public did not realise the necessity for this, and it was only by the combined efforts of the 100-horse-power racing motor car driven by Percy Cornwall (a member of Stone's party) and a detachment of police, that a way sufficiently wide for the exit of the monoplane was secured, while six men held the tail of the monoplane. The engines were allowed to run for about a minute, when, at a signal from the aviator, the winged structure was set free. The machine ran forward on its pneumatic wheels in the face of a light breeze, and after keeping to the ground for a distance of 75 yards, the pilot depressed the elevator, causing the monoplane to swoop up into the air, a motion that { was accomplished by a breathless pause j among the watchers. Right past the I crowded grandstand the bird-machine went, at an altitude of about 50 feet, and then swerved towards the outer Domain. When turning, a gust of wind struck the plane, causing it to heel over, but the balance was smartly regained by the pilot. It was apparent, however, that the engine was not working strongly enough, and the monoplane immediately commenced a downward glide, alighting on the slope of the outer domain to the rear of the exhibition building. Before the pilot had time to alight, a crowd of some thousands surged about the aircraft, and this crowd grew considerably as the monoplane was lifted over the dividing fence to be wheeled back to its tent. An hour elapsed before the crowd vanished from the vicinity. Mr. Stone Said that, when leaving the cricket ground he felt that his altitude was not sufficient to clear the trees and houses ahead, hence his early descent. He said the monoplane was not injured when alighting, but the engine was not "drawing" as well as he liked it to "draw."
