CO-OPERATIVE DAIRY FACTORIES.

To the Editor. Sir,—Winter is upon us, and for the next two or three months the milking will he practically nil, and farmers will have a little leisure time. Now, Sir. 1 would recommend that they set them selves a-thinking, and try to iind out whether or not we can improve our district or do anything to bring more grist to the mill. In the matter of our dairy factories, for instance, it seems to me that in some cases we l can become still more co-operative. lam sure every right-thinking persons, be lie a dairv farmer, a worker or a townsman, would agree with Mr. J. S. Connett, chairman of the. Hell Block Co-op. Dairy Factory Co., in his remarks l on our system of co-operation before the Empire Trade Commission a few weeks ago. There can be no doubt that co-operation amongst the dairy farmers has brought the dairy industry to its present successful state. Take away our co-oper-ative works and factories, and wo become mere puppets in the hands of proprietors. Having gone so far, then, can we not still venture further? Take, !for example, the sister districts of Oakura and Omata. Would it not be possible for these to jointly own one factory, with facilities for manufacturing both butter and cheese? Then, with home-separation and cream-carts for the bye-roads: the smaller cheameries might be dispensed with and a big saving effected in the wear and tear of roads, to say nothing of horses and vehicles. As the cx-Covernor (Lord Islington) told us in his address to the farmers of Taranaki, co-operation is our one sure rock. I trust that the farmers will bestir themselves for the advancement in this direction of the country, and consequently the town.—l am, etc.,

FARMER'S WIFE.
