TDRF TOPICS. .' (By "Moturoa.") Races at Timaru to-day. The Masterton Autumn meeting opens to-morrow. Thrax is much in favour for the Timaru Cup. Toreador paid a very fair'price in the Flying at Avondale. Jockeys B. Deeley and L. Wilson rode a brace of winners apiece at Hastings. Leouta, who has won several races lately, looks to be leniently treated in the Waipipi Cup with 6st 71b. Mr. E. J. Watt sold the seven-year-old gelding Theodore to Mr. H. Hickey, of Hastings, last week. The price was 32 guineas. Principal winning owners at Hastings were Messrs. J. B. Reid and F. Easton £325. each; J. Paterson £2OO, G. D. Greenwood £220, and Hon. J. D. Ormond £lB5. Pakau, who has won quite a number of races mostly over hurdles —in 'Stralia, is to be mated with St. Savin in the coming season. The big daughter of Conqueror—Torpilliere showed poor form in New Zealand. There are some old stagers running at Timaru to-day, notably the ouce famous Lord Soult and Lupulite, who figure in a four furlong fluttter. Many of the cracks have declined their engagements, but Specialform looks fairly dangerous in the Welter. 1 Up North they are whispering an- • other "good thing." This is Bonikoff, who "lined" Bow Bells and Blue "Garment over four furlongs run in 49 1-5. That's. • surely worth watching! I Paritutu has benefited by his spell, and Mr. Jervey George has hopes of • reproducing the old gelding in good form this winter. You can't slay some of these old battlers—the horse I mean—with an axe, and as for old age, why they only laugh at it. Horses race in all shapes, but one that was offered to a down-the-line trainer the other day was from all accounts I just the limit. He was Napoleon Bonaparte without the Napoleon. Just a bag of bones and only fit to feed the lions. The trainer eyed the alleged racbo"-" critically Fore and aft. "What do you think of him?" the proud owner asked. "Well." replied the trainer, "ha ain't I such a bad boss considerin' his narrow escape from bein' a cow!" Truly. • some people think everv quadruped with ' thin legs is a champion racehorse. Kakaina cost her connections a tidy at Avondale. On the strength of j attractive track form sir was heav'lv ! minted on, but her behaviour at the barrier was a trifle more shocking. A short time ago the mare, it will be re membared, absolutely refused to be ship ped to Sydney after her passage had been paid and all! The question now re.nains, r'oes her party run Kakama, or 1 does Kakama run her party? Master Laddo's jumping at Hastings was awful, and he finished last in his maiden effort over the small sticks. Bandalcrio broke a blood vessel in the Longlauds Hurdles, and the 'chaser Cor a:eon broke down in the open hurdle race on Wednesday. There does not appeal to be any hope of Cora/on standing an other preparation. The New Plymouth Jockey 'Club has decided to add a weight-for-age race to its Autumn programme in 1015. The race will be for 500 sovs, for two-year olds and upwards, over a course of six furlongs. The full details of this enterprising venture of the Club will be announced later.
