NOXIOUS WEED DESTROYER
A number of settlers and others assembled at a vacant section at the corner of Devon and Mount Edgecombe streets yesterday afternoon, to witness n weed-destroying demonstration by Mr. Long (representing Thos. K hong & Co., Federal street, Auckland). A piece of ground some three or four yards square was set apart for the first part of the display. From this plot the foliage of the blackberry and other weeds was cut and cleared off and then thorougly sprayed with the mixture. Mr. Long claims that in the course of a couple of months the mixture will penetrate to the roots and kill the weed outright. The roots may then he pulled up, and will be found to be quite dead. A piece of ground some 30 yards square was then taken. On this portion of the section tli.e blackberry and weeds j were about 2ft. Gin. high, and were not molested in any way. The foliage was well sprayed with the mixture, and it ! is claimed that in a couple of weeks the dressing will scorch and dry the vegetation so that it may be burned off. After the burning, the roots of blackberry and other noxious weeds may then be easily dressed and destroyed. For the whole of the demonstration on this section one half-pint of the specific was utilised, making about 4'/ 2 gallons of mixture. Later in the afternoon Mr. Long gave a further demonstration on the vacant section in King street, at the back of the Theatre Royal. Fanners and others interested will be able, to inspect these plots for themselves from time to time, and so judge the ellicicacy of Long's "Weodian" on its merits.
Farmers and settlers should bear in mind that the spec!lie is not an expensive one. If the No. 2 method is used, spraying the weed as its stands, without cutting back the foliage, the cost works out, at from 30s to £2 per acre, according to the density of the weeds. After the spraying, the 'weeds are burnt oil', and it is then an easy matter to kill the weed outright by' another application of ''Weodian." It is poor land, indeed, that will not stand this expense, and if only half of what is claimed for | the specific be true, farmers who have weed-infested properties should become acquainted with its value without furI ther delay.
Mr. Long will give a demonstration at the Inglewood salevards this afternoon.
