BRAVE ENGLISH GIRL

IN THE FIRING LINE. New York, February 22. American correspondents in Mexico City express an unbounded admiration for the heroism of an English girl, .Miss Violet Hastings, during the carnage that marked the fighting. She knows six languages, and was of inestimable value in gathering news. She repeatedly penetrated into the most dangerous sections of the battle zone, chatting with Mexicans, Frenchmen, Germans, Italians, half-breeds and Indians, and with generals, privates and beggars. She took risks, says one correspondent, no man ventured to take, and experienced adventures enough to mane a thrilling novel. Miss Hastings called the affair '"jolly good sport." Mrs. Wilson, wife of the American Ambassador, and half-a-dozne American women have enthusiastically praised her for her courage.
