Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., has been' appointed chairman of the Licensing Committees for the districts of Taru- ' liaki and Taumarunui. A Toulon cablegram states that Mrs. Evans, wife of Commander Evans, of the Terra Nova, died on board the Otrftnto from peritonitis. A telegram from Wanganui reports tho death of Mr. J. T. Stewart, aged 85, one of the oldest and most respected residents. He was formerly Public Works Engineer and member of the Wanganui River Trust. The Rev. J. W. and Mrs. Griffin were farewellcd by the members of the Cape Egmont circuit at Opunake last week and presented with a portmanteau. Rev. Griffin has taken up bis duties at Waitara, and is succeeded at Opunake by Rev. Mr. Tinsley. Mr. J. J. O'Orady, who has for the last eleven years been in charge of the prison works at the New Plymouth Gaol, has been promoted to the position of gaoler at Picton, where he will assume his duties on May 1, Mr. O'Grady's position here will be taken by Mr. Gorvy, of Wellington.
The death is announced in Christchurch of Mr. Robert Buchanan, iron founder. He went to Christchurch in 1870, and was a steady advocate of encouragement of local industries. He was one of the. founders of the Canterbury Industrial Association, and was president in 1010. He was chairman of the Working Exhibits Committee at the International Exhibition.
