AX AUCKLAND DEPUTATIOX. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Friday. A temperance deputation waited on the Mayor and urged the civic authorities to refrain from supplying any alcoholic refreshment to the officers during the visit of the battleship New Zealand to Auckland, and asked the Mayor also to appeal to citizens to adopt a similar attitude.
Mr. Parr, replying, expressed the opinion that if the sailormen wanted a glass of ale it would do them no harm. They must take the sailor as he was, not as his temperance friends wished to see him. He declined to make an appeal to the citizens. He saw that the bluejackets in Wellington had behaved excellently ,and they were not likely to disgrace their uniform in Auckland.
.The executive committee meet subsequently and decided to adhere to the previous decision to supply a glass of ale to men desiring it at the Town Hall luncheon.
