A .Sydney cablegram reports the death of Mrs. Adams, widow of. Mr. George Adams, of sweepstake fame. The Rev. A.. H. Colvile left yesterday morning for Rotorua on his annual holiday. Mrs. and Miss Colvile accompanied him.
Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., has been elected unopposed as the representative of the grouped boroughs of Eltluun, Stratford and Inglewood on the New Plymouth Harbor Board. On the recommendation of the Medi-cal-Superintendent (Dr. E;.'.A. Walker), staff-nurses Lea;. Afflick,. Young,' and; Wallace, of the New Plymouth :Hospita), have been promoted' to' the- rank, of' 'sisters.
Yen Areluliacon Ilobhausc, son of Dr. Edmund Hobhouse, formerly Bishop of Nelson, has been appointed Residential Canon of Gloucester. He was born in Nelson in' 1802, and is a distinguished theological writer. Mr. F. P. Corkill has been appointed to act on behalf of the Taranaki County Council as a member of the Assessment Court in connection with the revision of ■the valuation rolls for Omata Riding and the outlying districts of Mangorei and Waitara-. . Mr. L. Birks, assistant-electrical engineer of the Public Works Department, is visiting New Plymouth for the purpose of conferring with Mr. H. Black, electrical engineer to the Borough Council, in regard to the projected duplication of tlie local electric transmission lines. Mr. Shrimpton, district engineer in the Telegraph Department, is also on a visit to tlie town in connection with departmental' business.
Bv tlie death of Mr. Thomas McOuinness tliere is removed a man who in his time was prominently identified with ■ this settlement. In his youth he served in the Royal Artillery, and in the early fifties lie came to New Plymouth and for several years was warder or orderly •at tlie old' Colonial Hospital at Te Henui under Dr. Peter Wilson. During the Maori wars lie served in the Taranaki Rifle Volunteer Corps, in which he held an ensign's commission, and in the Militia, in which he held the rank of lieutenant. He was 85 years of age. Lord Whitburgh, accompanied by his mother, Lady Whitburgh, and his sister, the Hon. Miss BGrthwick, arrived in Auckland by the Macedonia on Satur-, i day. Lord' Whitburgh informed an Auckland' Star interviewer that tliev had thoroughly enjoyed their sojourn in Australia; and expected to have an equally pleasant time in this Dominion. Tlie resignation of Dr. Shand, professor of natural philosophy at the Otago University, was received at vestcrdav's meeting of the University Council, the resignation to date from March 31.-IBM. Reference was made by several' mem» bers to the splendid work Dr. Shand has performed in theUhiversitv since his appointment in 1870. A motion of, apprec l iation of' Dr. Shand's valuable services will 'be proposed at a subsequent meeting. Intimation of the resignation will' be forwarded' to the Otago Presbyterian Chlirch Board' of Property, with whom the appointment of a new" professor lies, subject to the concurrence of'the Presbyterian'Synqd' of Otago and Southland. The death took place at the Auckland Hospital on Monday of Mr. John Hughe, ex-superintendent of the Auck-
land City Fire Brigade. The late Mr. Hughes was a native of Liverpool, where he was born, 82 years ago. He came out to the colony forty years ago, and has lived in Auckland practically ever since. For many years Mr. Hughes was in charge of the City Fire Brigade, his superintendeney dating back to Hie time when the brigade was a vol»'iteer r>n°, and it was in the reorganisation of the department some years ago that he resigned. On Saturday last he was removed'to the hospital owing to serious complications. Deceased is survived by his widow and a nephew/ Mr. John Hughes, of Whangarel, his only living relativ in New Zealand. The late Mr. Thomas Finlavson, managing director of Sargood," Son and Ewen, whose death occurred at Auckland on Monday, came out from Scotland. n< a hoy, and entered the service of' Sargood.
