A GAMBLING CASE.
J!OOKMAKERS IN* TROUBLE.

At the Magistrate's Court Peter Grant and W. Whelan were charged with liavng assisted to publish a betting chart without an imprint of the name being attached. Defendants pleaded not guilty. Edward Eales, Sergeant, stationed at Rotorua and Gaoler, said that on February 24th he received a prisoner named Thomas Wilson, -on remand. Wilson was in custody till March 4th and four letters (produced) came to him. Witness opened them in the prisoner's presence. One letter contained a double betting slip for the Wangnnui races, and a similar slip for Dunedin rices. The envelope bud on the outside "Tf unclaimed return to bov 715. Christeh'irch." The second letter contained similar cards, and a third one contained a double chart for the Easter and Autumn Handicaps, and also a chart for the Wanganui Cup and Flying 1 Handicap. Chief Detective Bishop drew attention to the stamps on the letters which were evidently put on by a stamp machine.
Arthur Wilson, a Maori, stated that he received, whilst in Mount Eden Gaol, the letters produced bv the previous witness. Tliev were from Barnett and Grant. Christehureh, with whom witness had done business. Alexander Wildev. nrintpr, stated that lie could not swear that" hp printed the matter on the envelopes in which the cards were enclosed. P. S. TT. Chambers. Clerk in the Chief Post Office, stated' tint th» stiimn on the envelope produced was. Barnett and Grant's, nnd was done with a machine lei)sod to that firm. The easo for the prosecution was closed and the case was adjourned till tomorrow.
