TURF TOriCS. (By "Moturoa."). The Ilawke's Bay autumn meeting opens at Hastings to-day and will be concluded to-morrow. The acceptances are large and racing should be very interesting. The Hawke's Bay C'up, run \ over a mile and a half, lias attracted a fine field including Bronze, Labor Day and Cheddar, as well as some promising customers in the light-weight division. The consistent Bronze should bold the" itop-weights safe, but danger may threaten from Lady Menschikoff, Merrivonia (who shaped really well at Awapuni),: or Ariom. Bronze will probably start a better favourite than Labor Day. The Porangahan Handicap, six furlongs, always draws a high-class field, and Gladiole, Emperador and Blue Lake are all Bpeedv sprinters. Peroneal, Eocene and Postillion are promising sorts and considerable interest will be centred on Postillion's first run in open company., Emperador has been responsible for fine (gallops since being taken to Hastings, ami the Canterbury crack will probably carry a lot of money to-day. If Postillion starts all Wanganui will be on him. Gladiole ran consistently <it Awapuni each day, and may keep' the favourites busy. On last week's form she should beat Blue Lake and Hermia anvliow, but "form" is not alwavs an infallible guide. Despite a rise of Tibs Rinaldo may be depended upon to run well in the Xursery Handicap. At Awapuni he i carried 7st 91bs, when lid put it all over Nightwatch, and Immer finished a loner way back with fist in the saddle. Both hurdle races look very open, but there should b° plenty of monev for Bollin. Mart on, Prince Eddie a»d Golden Water in their engagements. The minor events have filled verv well, siu-1 winners appear to be wel] concealed. Aclirnv In® been re-handicapped for his Awamini S-icorss, anil will be required to put no > fist Gibs in the Poukawa Handicap. He won .1 mile race from end to end with Pst nibs in the saddle last Thursday, so that his connections liave little 'to grumble at to-day. Tn the same race, figure Gazette and Mummer, a pair of horses with excellent track credentials, j The Autumn Handicap, once round. | looks very open.' Obligant mav show up better in the weaker companv than lie did at Palmerston last week. 'His party lost, heavilr each start there, but the Obli.srado enlt must have shown them a decent wallop to have caused such spirited backing, Evnect reads well with 7st , Olbs. and Tt : rkline (if reserved), is anolh"r that is not undulv weighted. .Another meeting of importance which onens to-day is the Avonilale .Tockev Gb'b's .Autumn gathering. Satisfactory fields wll -contest the open events, and the .M(iid»n and Chevalier Handicaps, as usual. will see exceptionally big crowds facing the starter. Twcntv-two horses were accepted for in the Maiden, and Hventv-six in th" Chevalier Handicap. B'»riot and her stable-mate. Montiform. will rot l»pk supporters in the Avondole Handicap, and other warm orders during the .Hv mav be Te Waharoa and Afarslin 1 McDonald. The meeting will be concluded on Saturday next. The well -known Haweri sportsman. ! .T. C. Moiiiefiore, was fairly successful at the Auckland -Trotting Chili's meeting last week. Pukekura ran second to Siintlial in the Mangere Handicap oil Wednesday, and later in the day finished in a similar position behind Te'vol Chimes in the TTobson Handican. Erin's Tvueey won the Autumn Handican. of 100 sovs. run over two miles, on Saturday after a fine race, the little Ha - w-a crack just wimrpo- by half a length after a game uphill race. Clive and U vjio'te also scored seconds at the fathering'. It is interesting to note tint Taruinlvi trotters cm hold their own against outsiders and it is n. wonder this li'-anch of sport'does not find favour in this province..
