Alegre was thrice rejected for military service, on the ground that he suffered fiom epileptic fits. King Alfonso, describing the attack, says that lie saw a man coming armed with a revolver. "He fired," he coneluded, ''and I rode at him. He tried to seize the reins, and fired again, the flash singeing my glove, while the hall grazed my horse. I then wheeled the horse, which knocked the man over with his shoulder as a policeman sprang upon him. The third shot was fired from the ground, and whistled overhead."
