EAST END RESERVE.
EXTENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS CONTEMPLATED.
COUNCIL APPROACHED FOR A SUBSIDY.
A large and influential deputation waited on the New Plymouth. Borough 'Council last night with <rn application for a. grant towards the erection of a new pavilion at the East End Bathing Reserve. The deputation was organised by the committee m charge of the reserve. As spokesman of the deputation, i Mr. F. C. J. Bellrmger -(Chairman of the Committee) said that the present ac- : commodation was quite inadequate for the' large crowds that visited the re- : serve, many of whom -were drawn from ! the country, The committee bad gone so far with improvements to the grounds } but beyond a certain stage it could not go without assistance from the Council., 'lt was estimated tlint so far 200.000 | people had visited the reserve. This season Tio fewer than 23 school -picnics had J been held tliere. The proposed strnc- ' ture would, according- to an independent estimate, post £2ofi. The spcalcer asked : Conncil to provide two-thirds of that I amount, the committee undertaking to provide tlic balance. Mr. W. H. Fletcher, secretary of the committer, submitted plans of the structure. which comprised additions to the ; present building. The pavilion was of ) very liandsome" design and was up-to- | date in every sense. Tt was desired to erect the building before the winter was over, in order to hold a series of even.'ins entertainments in the pavilion in aid of the funds. Mr. Fletcher also pointed out that the committee liad taken over ft swamp and improved it out of sight, so that it was now worth £2OOO. Cr. Morey pointed out tha/t it was rather an unfair thing to ask t'he Council at its last meeting l>efore going out of office to commit itself to the expenditure, -while Cr. Ambnry asked the deputation what they proposed to ask the public to do in the matter. Cr. Anibun- • also thought the Conncil should fini £IOO, the committee a similar amount and the general public £IOO. Tn reply, Mr. BeTlr'inger pointed ou that the public had already contribute! 1)v way of gate fees and the like ove £4OO.
j In a sympathetic replv, the Mayor j eulogised the committee for its pu'liliei sniritedness, and incidentally remai'ked J tliat many residents did not realise the j valuable asset New Plymouth possessed r in it 3 fnreshoTe.
Gr. Clarice proposed and Cr /Buxton seconded that the Council provide halt the cost o! the additions, the contribution not to exceed £l5O.
An amendment was moved bv Cr. Morev and seconded bv Cr .Manriix, that the matter lie referred to the incoming Council for Its favourable consideration In the course of a genera! discussion, Cr. Euxton, In supporting tlie motion, suggested tliat the committee might also improve the approaches to the reserve by war of tree planting. * Cr. Clarke said that such things as these tended to popularise the town, and he imly hoped the Brenkwnter people would come forward with a similar proposal.
The amendment was rejected in favor of the motion, which was carried by 1) votes to 2.
