BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY REPORTS. Various monthly reports will he considered at to-night's meeting of the Borough Council. WORKS COMMITTEE.
The, recommendations of the Works Committee include the following:— '"That the Borough Engineer be instructed to lay sewers in Bell, Shortland, and Wakefield streets; that Messrs. M. Thomas and others be informed that the question of a street light in Hamblyn street will be kept in view when the Council again consider the street lighting- question; that the Borough Engineer be instructed to report upon the question of a suitable rubbish tip with a view to closing the Hobson street tip during the winter months, that a copy of Mrs. Coker's letter with reference to the planting of part of Fillia street be forwarded to the Pukekura Park Board; that the action of His Worship the Mayor in arranging for the cancellation of the Glen Road contract be confirmed; that the Town Clerk submit a report upon the question of removing the clerical work of the Electric Light Department from the substation to the Town Hall, the reorganisation of office work, and the necessary office accommodation required, and that in the meantime he be authorised to engage such necessary! temporary assistance as he may re-1 ouire; that the terms upon which the' Railway Department are prepared to grant a lease of part of the railway reserve adjoining the East End bathing reserve be accepted; that the Borough Engineer be instructed to peg out the land, and that the land, upon the lease being signed, be placed under the control of the East End Committee, the committee to shift back the fence at their own nost; that the Rev. Mr. Evans be informed that, provided he will undertake to contribute one-half of the cost, the Council will extend the sewer alone John "treet for six chains to enable his residence to be connected (estimated cost €26 10s); that Mr. F. S. Corry be informed that the formation of a portion of Fillis street is included in the new loan, but that until the loan is floated the work cannot be proceeded with; that the Estimates Committee be recommended to make provision in next year's estimates for the cost of constructing a concrete roadway in Currie street from Gill street to the railway goods shed tratc (estimated cost £OO per chain); that the Borough Engineer be authorised to give effect to his recommendation to lay a second 15-inch pipe in concrete alongside the present pipe across Devon street to carry tlie water from the stream from the Hospital grounds (estimated cost £50); that the Borough Engineer be authorised to lay sewers in St .Aubvn street from Weymouth street to C'utfield Road on both' sides of tI)C street under the footpaths (estimated cost, including connections, £304); that the plans of the house-numbering in Vivian street and Leach street as submitted by the Borough Engineer be approved; that the plans of the permanent levels of the following streets be approved: (a) Watson street from Lemon street to Courtenay street; (b) Hobson street from Hendrie street to Lemon street; that the Borough Engineer's letter're lowering the grade at the intersection of Devon and Morley streets,(estimated cost £200) be referred to the incoming Council to deal with; that Mr. Standish be informed that the Borough Engineer reports that the water-pipe in Tukapa street is only sufficient for domestic supply, that provision is made in the new loan for a larger main in this street, and that as soon as the loan is raised and the main laid down his application for water connection for a water trough will be granted; that this

Council nominate Mr. Skitrop (Borough i Engineer) as an engineer member of the s Plumbers' Board of New Zealand; that > the New Plymouth Gas Company be i asked to quote for the supply of 10,000 gallons of tar to be supplied during one i year as requested by the Borough Engineer; that the attention of the Railway Department be drawn to the unsanitary condition of the water closets and urinals at the goods sheds, and the Department' 8e ftak'ecl to connect with the Borough sewerage system; that the question of the purchase of an extra traction engine be referred to next year's Estimates Committee; that the attention of the Borough Inspector be dijawn to trees overhanging the footpaths in the west end of the town and to the gorse on the bank in Govcr street south of Gilbert street and in Waiwaka Terrace, and that he be instructed to see that all hedges are cut back to the boundary." FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommends that all offers for the flotation of the loans be considered at the iirst meeting fcfter June 30 next; that on- nor cent. brokerage be paid to any person arranging the flotation of the loans on terms satisfactory to the Council; that in lieu of accepting the full amount in one sum the Council, convenience of lenders, would be prepared to consider the acceptance of the money in the following sums, provided the whole amount is guaranteed:—£42.ooo Loan: £20,000 September. 1013; £12,000 January. 1014; £IO,OOO January.. 1013, £.)5,000 loan: £IO.OOO January, 1014; £20,000 June. 1014; £25.000 January, 1915. • ELECTRTC LIGHT COMMITTEE. The Electric Light Committee recommends:— That this Council favors the proposal of the Public Works Department to import Australian hardwood for the purpose of sale to local bodies, and that the Council will be prepared to purchase poles from the Department, provided the prices are satisfactory, and that in (lie meantime the electrical engineer submit'an estimate of the quantity and sizes required; that the borough engineer be instructed to lower the bed of the erpek at the power-house from the end of the concrete race to Waiwakailm river (estimated cost £200.1; that the borough engineer V instructed to submit ?. report upon the question of lifting the head of water at the intake. RESERVES COMMITTEE. The committee recommends: The pathway across section 1!W0 having li"cn laid out during the will of the owner, the committee offered no objection to the application of Mr. F. T. Bellriiiger to hring the said section under the Land Transfer Act; that before any steps be ' taken to re-let the old waterworks reserve the Works Committee be requested to state whether they have any use for tlio reserve. ENGINEER'S REPORT. ' i
Mr. C. Skttrop (borough engineer) reports:— Streets: The repairing of Devon street, between Liardet and Hohson streets, is now completed. The metalling of Belt road, between Miingotuku stream and Devon street, is completed, except for Winding. Tlie footpaths have been filled in, but require covering with ■;mo1 gravel, fllen road, between Ctitlild road and Tiracken street, is lieins meialled.' Footpaths: Forty chains of footpaths have been re-formed. Twelve chains have been covered with gaol ■irav«l and 110 chains have been tarred and sanded. The footpath between Bracken street ami (ilen road is completed. Waterworks: The remainder of the Sin. water pipes are delivered on the South road, and the work of laying is progressing. Tt will be necessary' to-or-der IT mere lengths to make up the shortage through broken pipes. The waterworks caretaker reports everything working satisfactorily at ilie 'filters' Three water connections have been made! Loin work: Oaine street formation is completed. Leach street formation is
progressing satisfactorily. Lemon street sewer is Inid to opposite tlio borough stables. I'amcron Mi'eec sewer is laid from Leach street towards Avenue road as far as required.
