YACHTING.

THE AMERICA CIT. San Francisco, March 1(1. Yachtsmen all over the world will be disappointed to learn that Sir Thomas Lipton's new challenge for the America Cup has been rejected by the Xew Yorkyacht Club. The reason for the rejection was the inclusion by Sir Thomas in his challenge of a condition that neither his own vessel nor that of the defenders should exceed Toft on the water-line. The deed of gift of the cup allows competing vessels of any length from 05ft to flOft. and the maximum length has always prevailed. To be forced to reduce this to a 75ft limit under the terms of the challenge was held by the Xew York Yacht Club to be contrary to the spirit of the deed of gift. The vote in rejection of Sir Thomas Lipton's terms was given as "unuminous," but. as a matter of fact, only some 40 of the club's 300 members were present at the meeting. Indeed, some members of the club are not in sympathy with the rejection of the challenge, livans R. Dick. junr.. a wellknown yachtsman, protested against the chili's action, taking up the cudgels on behalf of the challenger to the following effect:— ••'the yachtsmen of this country admit almost unanimously tint the type of vacht which has defended the cup within recent vears has been the sort of vessel which makes for all that is undesirable in yaehtins. The present >aclit racing, measurements of the New York Club were made to drive this very tyne of vacht out of existence. The yacht defenders have been racing machines pure and simtdc. which an- and can he nf Tin use whatever for the purpose o[ vachlinir aft.,;, ,h" ~.,,.„.
