Writes a correspondent:—The Taranaki -Maoris were well represented at the important .Maori meeting recently held in connection with the opening of a Maori church near (lisborne. Many things of great interest to Maoris generally were discussed at that meeting that can only be reported to Maoris satisfactorily by a visit from those who took part in the meeting. Accordingly, Te Kahupukoro and Ngarangi Katitia, with others, have been visiting all the Maori, settlements along the coast between New Plymouth and Opunake and giving first-aid information to all interested. The most important subject in the estimation of the visitors was the proposal on the part of the Native Minister to place the Maoris on the same footing in every respect as the Europeans. For this change the South Taranaki Maoris are not yet prepared. They think certain advantages that may possibly be derived from the Treaty of Waitangi may be lost to them. They are also rather annoyed that the statement has gone forth to the world that Taranaki Maoris are consenting parties to the Native Minister's proposals. Opportunity has been taken also at some of these gatherings to discuss the request of the leaseholders for the freehold of the Maori lands, and a letter has been written to the Premier asking him to explain fully the position of the Government in this matter in order to remove the anxiety they feel lest their lands he taken from them. Many of them are also intensely suspicious of the proposal to grant individual titles to lands held by the Public Trustee as suggested by some persons. Thev think that were a title granted and all restrictions removed it would not be long before many Maoris would be tempted to sell and in a short time lost; both land and money.
