AMENDING THE ARBITRATION ACT. THE GOVERNMENT'S INTENTION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 11, 8.50 p.m. Sydney, April 11. Referring to the Southern miners' strike, Mr. Camiichael said that the men claimed that there was a danger of union officials being dismissed because they were interesting themselves in union business which hardly concerned complaints of breaches of awards. The Government had given an assurance that as soon as the House met it would do its best to amend the Arbitration Act and do away with any fear of victimisation. THOUSANDS IDLE. Sydney, April 11. With the closing of the Central mine at Broken Hill to-morrow, 4GOO men will be rendered idle. THE BARRIER TROUBLE. Sydney, April 11. The Silverton Tramway-Company and the Barrier Labor Federation executive held a conference, and as a. result the executive submitted proposals which the company's representative telegraphed to j the directors in Melbourne. The Citi- ' zens' Committee, after holding several I meetings, disbanded. No reply has yet been received from the Labor' Federation regarding the company's offer to run provision and mail trams at ordinary rates without prejudice, provided that all pickets were withdrawn. A POSSIBLE COMPROMISE. Received 11, 11.50 p.m. Sydney, April 11. An aggregate meeting of Southern j miners has been called for Monday to discuss the position. Mr. .Carmi'chael will attend.
