WORK AND WAGES.

MOULDERS' UNION CONFERENCE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, April 9. The Interstate Conference of the Federated Iron, Brass and Steel Moulders has opened. New Zealand is represented. STRIKE AT PUPONGA. • HOSTILE DEMONSTRATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. The Nelson Mail correspondent wires that several hostile demonstrations have taken place at Puponga, where a strike has existed since Monday week. Last night an attempt, partly successful, was made to burn down the house of a deputy who remained at work in an official capacity. Police were despatched to the scene. There was a rumor that forty miners were ou the way to Puponga to replace the strikers. The latter assembled on the beach, and arrived with all manner of offensive weapons. There was a considerable wait before the strikers concluded that they had been hoaxed.

A striker broke a window of a butcher's shop and stole dome meat. He dropped letters on the door which led to his identification. The union gave, him four hours to leave the district, which lie did, paying for the purloined goods. The president of the union states that the men acted entirely on their own responsibility, without reference to the Federation of Labor or any other body, which apparently debars them from strike pay.
