Mr. J. A. McKenna, Mayor of Patea, intends leaving on a visit to England shortly. Mr. Edward Newman, M.P. for Rangitikei, and Mrs. Newman are visiting New Plymouth. Mr. J. W. Arthur, of New Zealand, has been appointed one of the assistant surveyors on the Northern Territory staff.

The death is reported from Dnneditt of Mr. J. T. Wright, one of the founders of Wright, Stephenson and Co., aged 85 years. A London cablegram reports the death' of Mr. W. J. Holloway, an actor wellknown in Australia, at the age of 70 years. t

The Hon. Roderick Ward, son of the Earl of Dudley, who was injured in the hunting field recently, is suffering from laceration of the brain. A Melbourne cablegram announces thedeath of the Hon. Sir Henry John Wrixon, K.C.M.G., president of the Legislative Council of Victoria since 1001, at the age of 74 years. The Rev. G. Smith, who participated" in the memorable defence of Rorke's Drift during the Zulu war, arrived in Auckland on Sunday by the Maheno* from Sydney. He retired from active service in the' army as chaplain someeight years ago, and is at present on a tour of Australasia, having recently left Egypt. He will spend two weeks in the Dominion, and then return toi England, ifi^

A cablegram from Paris announces the death of M. Jean Constant, the French painter and writer on art. His most noteworthy picture was "Hamlet," which was bought by the French Government. He was also highly esteemed as a por-, trait painter, and amongst others of note who sat to him were Queen Victoria (whose portrait was exhibited in the Royal Academy in the year of her death, 1901), Queen Alexandra, and Pope Leo XIII.

The death has occurred at Exmouth, in the 84th year of his age, of MajorGnneml James Harwood Rocke, C.8., late Inspector-General of Recruiting and Deputy-Judge-Advocate-General at Headquarters. He served in the Kaffir war of the 'so's, and the New Zealand war of the Ws, taking part in the affairs at Nuktimaru and the capture of the Putahi Pa. His services in the New Zealand campaign were mentioned in despatches, and he received the medal and the brevet of lieutenant-colonel. He saw active service later on in the E<ryptian campaign.
