A BOARDING-HOUSE FIRE.

| BOAH DEBS' XAKKOW ESCAPES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. A two-storied wooden building at the corner of Victoria mid Federal streets, occupied by Miss Elizabeth Smith as a boarding-house, was discovered to be on fire early on Sunday morning, by tho watchman on the lire tower. The brigade arrived smartly. Dense rtmoke obscured the Victoria street frontage, and the cry was raised that several persons were at the upstairs windows. Lntlders were quickly in requisition and six boarders were brought safely to the street. It was reported that a.man T«d woman' were still in the building. A H"'"v.n fo-m J the woman o-i a staircase, which she had been descending when her escape was cut off by the fire. She had collapsed en the landing. She was carried out and soon recovered.

None of the boarders were much the worse for their experience except a colored man. named Johnson, who cut his. hand badly when breaking a window. One of th« firemen, named Bradley, while assisting in the rescue was overcome by smoke. Some difficulty was experienced in locating him, but he was finally got out little the worse for his experience. The brigade <rot the fire extinguished fit about ten minutes. The damage was not great, most of the furniture having been removed on the previous day. The fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen and spread up the staircase, cutting off the escape of the people who were sleeping upstairs. .
