DISTRICT NEWS.
URUTI. (From Our Own Correspondent). A concert in aid of the Xurses' Home ■Fund'was held on Wednesday, 9th inst., and was a great success, the takings iat the door being a record. The weather being fine, settlers from all around turned out in large numbers, and they w.ere rewarded with a splendid entertainment. Songs were rendered by Miss Maudsley, Miss Mouat, Miss Jolly, Mrs. Musker, Mrs. Larsen, Mrs. Kelly,, Miss ; Johnston, Miss Jury, Miss Richardson, Mr. C. Musker, Mr. Vale and Mr. Larsen; Mr. R. Aroa, a recitation; and a pia 110 duet by the Misses Murray. The Uruti milkers seem to be finding .out the value of milking machines, about half a dozen being installed within the last nine months. The settlers seem quite satisfied about the machines doing away with a lot of hard work. The re-metalling of the Main road, between Urenui and flruti, is progressing satisfactorily, and the settlers are once again looking forward to smooth going.
The milking season is drawing to a close. As far as Uruti is concerned it will be one of the most profitable yet experienced. The weather right through has been perfect dairying weather, and the herds are all looking well, and should winter all right, as turnip crops and hav seem plentiful. The weather is fine, but we have had plenty of rain lately, and a few fine days would be much appreciated by the backblockcrs. the roads not being too good just at present.
