MINERS AND NON-UNIONISTS. A THREATENED STRIKE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, April 1. Fifty-two thousand miners at Rhondda and Rhymney have given notice to strike if fifty thousand non-unionists are still employed. A thousand miners at Wrexham struck as a protest against the employment of non-unionists. AN AUSTRALIAN CRUSADE. EXTENSIVE STRIKE FEARED. Sydney, April 2. Members of the Amalgamated Miners' Association and other unions on the Barrier are carrying on a strong crusade against non-unionists. The whole shift employed at the amalgamated zinc works struck because four men declined to join the union. Subsequently the whole of the employees of the Silverton Tramway Company were called out and traffic completely stopped. The employees of several firms knocked off, because of the refusal of the clerks to join the union. The trouble threatens to spread, for all the unions are strongly supporting the movement. Business is seriously 1 affected.
A mass meeting of the Miners' Association decided to ask the Government to nationalise the Silverton trams. . Large numbers of southern miners, fearing the strike will he protracted, are leaving the district. There are many complaints of the inertness'of the Government over the strike. WHY THE MINERS STRUCK. APPEALS FOR SUPPORT. PROBABLE GOVERNMENT ACTION. Received 2, 5.50 p.m. i Sydney, April 2. Delegates from the striker's'are endeavoring to raise funds in New South Wales,. Victoria and Queensland. Four bands from the South Coast have arrived to play in the streets of Sydney, with a view to enlist financial svm-

Mr. Willis, president of the Illawarra Miners' Federation, says the crux of the whole question is that the miners want a substantial guarantee that the legal power of dismissal held by the employers shall not be used for the victimisation of .unionists in the future as in the past. *■ The Sydney Labor Council has circularised the unions *or financial assistance to the dependents of strikers. The circular states that 4000 men have struck.
Mr. Carmichael meets the delegates on Friday, with a view to learning definitely the reasons for the strike, after which he will make an announcement regarding the Government's action.
The Strike Fund Committee has decided, if sufficient money is available, to allow each member 17s Cd a week, with 2s fid additional for each child under fourteen. This will absorb £2500 weekly. STRIKES SETTLED. Received 2, 11.30 p.m. " . ' Sydney, April 2. The Broken Hill scrike is settled, arid the Silverton tramways will resume immediately.
THE STRIKE RENEWED.
Received 3, 1.15, a.m. Sydney, April 2. Later news from Broken Hill states that there has been a recrudescence of the trouble, and the men are still out. A RAILWAY STRIKE. THREE HUNDRED PORTERS OUT. Received 3, 1.15 a.m. Sydney, April' 2. Another big strike has occurred unexpectedly. Three, hundred • ] railway porters in the Darling Harbor railway yard struck this afternoon. The action was well-timed from their standpoint, as thousands of storekeepers throughout' the country arrange to have their monthly orders on the railways by the second day of the month. Drapers will be seriously inconvenienced, where they ?.re not heavy losers. >/ . w . i- >- NORTHERN COAL STRIKE. ULTIMATUM FROM THE MEN. Received 3, 1.15 a.m. Sydney, April 2. An acute position has developed on the Northern coalfields. A delegate from the Board of the Colliery Employees' Federation has issued an ultimatum demanding a conference of the mine-owners and calling upon them to settle the present difficulty within seven days.
