J A few points on the niaehine-milkin of cows were given at the sittings of the , Food Commission at Sydney lajt weejcI Mr. Lionel Paper, the representative of a New Zealand milking machine, was I giving evidence on the superiority of maI chine-milking over hand-milking. .One of his points was that it did away with child hhor. lie also stated that it ensured greater cleanliness. It was pointed out by the commissioner (Mr. R. Eavinl that the criticism on machinemi'king was that once a machine became dirty'it could never he made clean again. That was because the tithes were made of rubber.- The witness replied that machine-milking was cleaner than hand-milking, as straining results would show. If the milk were allowed to remain in the tubes it would immediately begin to breed bacteria, and in less than a a hour there would be millions of genus in the tubes. Unfortunately the average farmer did not observe this precaution. Tie did his-milk-ing. went to breakfast, and then returned to clean the machine. That was the reason of farmers holding the belief that machine-milking was less clean-
