Inside the distance Charge lessened the wap a little, hut as (hey passed the post there was a ;'ood neck between the pair and there was no shadow of doubt a« to what won. The jndsre hoisted Charge's number. and then Feihlin« forgot it's reputation for calmness. The clerk of the course was Silver Rose in as thy winner when I'riee noticed the numbers, and asked the man in the box point blank if he hadn't made a mistake. The crowd set up a fearful din, and the police moved over to protect the judge. It was current talk on the course that the stewards met and called in the judge, hut there was no official intimation as to that. To cap all the 'tote' paid o''t £1 top much tc, sixty of Silver Rosf.'s supporters, and the latter, under the circumstances, will consider they are justly entitled to the -extra dividend. Jtulrfes are not infallible, but tiiis is surclv" tlic. worst decision ..... x
that lias been given for some time. The two horses were. racing iorkwl together, find there was no mistaking the leader's colors. The only possible explanation is that the man in the box misplaced the numbers, (i and 0, but he could have easily altered that. The writer did not back Silver Rose, but sympathises with Messrs. Walsh and Quartermain, the mare's owners, and the least the Fending -T ■C. can do is to semi them a cheque, for the amount of the Stakes. But there is a chance of that - T don't think.
The Wanganui trots did not pass off without a regrettable incident either. After finishing down the, straight, when poorly supported, in the Easter Handicap on Monday, Erin's Tracev was sent out a very torrid favourite for the Hallance Stakes run over the same distance. The liavera horse made up his handicap smartly, and half a mile from home was up with the leaders. Here Todd Bells met with interference and drojwc! back, Erin's Tracev galloping openly at the time, Todd B.Hs closed up a:>;ti;i inst before reaching the straight, but Erin's Tracev appeared to stop the Abbey Bells' colt. The latter was not pushed after that, and trotted in a considerable distance behind Erin's Tracer. A protest for galloping saw the winner disqualified, and the decision was abo;u right. Tt was hard luck for .Mr. Montefiore, but the rider was certainly to blame. Erin's Tracey broke frequently and lost nothing by it, galloping cm until he got info his stride again. Apart from the horse's inconsistency and his apparent interference with Todd Bells there was ample grounds for the stewards to rule as tliey did on the point protested upon.
