j FARMER KILLED BY A COW. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Wednesday. A well-known resident of Stewart Island, Mr. James R. Thompson, was fatally gored by a cow on Tuesday, He left home ill the morning to bring in the cows, and, not returning, a search was instituted. His dead body was found in the bush, a horn having penetrated his abdomen. Deceased was 6Q years of age, and was the father of Eric Thompson, the vocalist, who was discovered .by iMelba. OLD MAN FOUND DEAD. Gisborne, Wednesday. Owen MeCormick, aged 73, was found dead near Te lvaraka. MISHAP ON EXURS'JON STEAMER. Wellington, Last Night, Captain James Smith, a well-known Auckland business man, suffered serious injury while returning- in the steamer Maori from the excursion to Picton on Monday. He was, in company with a niece, and in the Straits a sea which broke on board carried both Captain Smith and his niece off their feet. The young lady was bruised and her uncle suffered a slight fracture of the collarbone, and had three ribs broken. Captain Smith was just returning from a visit with his wife to the Cold Lakes. FATALITIES AT TIMARU. Timaru, Last Night. Alfred Shepherd, aged 23, who managed his father's farm at Sutherland*, was found in an orchard on Tuesday, killed by a gunshot wound in. his head. An open verdic-t was returned, there being no evidence to show how the shot was fired. A constable said the gun might have caught in the trees. A boy of eleven, Cecil Fifield, died from compression of the brain, through falling on his forehead on a stone when running down a steep hill near Coraldine.
