UNIVERSITY DEBATING CONTEST. Per Press Association. Wellington, Sunday. The University debating contest opened on Saturday evening and resulted:— Otago University (L. H. Hunt and F. B. Adams) 1, Victoria College (C. A. L. Treadwell -;md G. G. Waters) 2, Canterbury College (R. X. Gray and P. Carrington) 3, Auckland College (P. MeLiver and L. Phillips) 4. The subject was: "That it is desirable that New Zealand should federate with Australia for purposes of defence by land and sea." The winners take the shield presented by Mr. J. W. Joynt, late Registrar of the University of New Zealand. They had the advantage over their opponents in the grasp of the subject, debating capacity and general excellence, besides displaying more confidence, as a result of more experience in public speaking.
