AUSTRALIAN RACING. PIASTRE WINS THE ACTUALS' STAKES.

By Cable—Press Association—Copyright, Sydney, March 22.

There \v:ts beautiful weather and a, good attendance at the first day of the A.J.C. mooting. Among those present were: Messrs <!reemvood, Mason, Watt and Cnrrie, of New Zealand. The competitors included the hest horses in training in Australia. There was disappoint inent at the absence of Bobrikofi', who did so well at the same meeting in lilll. Paisano, who recently ran poorly at Kcnbera Crange, was scratched for the Hurdles, in which Don Quex ran fairly. Merrie Lad, the other New Zealand horse competing, was not conspicuous. A splendid held contested the Autumn Stakes. Endorus, Bernard, Almissa and Hallowmass, all English bred, were specially noticeable for ipiality. OlTa. as at Melbourne, acted as pacemaker for PL-ire. who, keeping we!! up throughout, came away at the distance and won handsomely. Hallowmass made a line showing, as did also .Taeamar. The disappointment of the race was Aurofodina. who. under Ihe whip. finMied eighth. The Sires' Produce Stakes saw the downfall of the hot favorite. Beragoon, who, after losing three lengths 'at'thc start, failed to eateli his only other llamhviektrained opponent. Twenty-two lined up for the nonenster Handicap. The public had been unable to find a favorite until the last few days, when Hart Ml and t'iih r were the popular picks. Hartfell was a solid favorite on the course, •folly Beggar was next, followed by Cider and Sir Willie. Cider was asked to carry three pounds more than any three-vear-old ever carried successfully in the Doncaster Handicap, but Cider's fine track work, combined with, the fact that MeLachlan chose him as his mount, was responsible for being strongly fancied. Jolly Beggar got .away with the leaders and remained ill .'front throughout, except when Nuwara Eliva challenged at the half-mile, hut Jollv Beggar shook him oil', and, going nicely, won a; good' race from a bunched crowd. Seatoudale was .prominent among the second division and finished ninth. . : . .As was' anticipated. Wolowa, 'after the withdrawal of Cider, had little trouble in winning'.the St. Leger. Cider'';, stable-mate, llanos, ran a good race, hut Wolowa. who was handy throughout. • finished ahead of him. Greenwood's Valido l'!). 7) started in the High-weight Handicap ami ran fairly, finishing about eighth. Results:— ' !
