GOLF.

THE EASTER TOURNAMENT. A DECIDED SUCCESS. The New Plymouth Golf Club's, annual tournament opened on the club's new cightecu-liole links at Waiwakaiho on Saturday. The weather at the opening was perfect, but about midday rain came on for a while, but cleared later, and the afternoon broke dazzling!}- line. There' were record entries, competitors hailing from all over the North Island, though disappointment was felt at the nonappearance of the cracks, Saunder Bros., Colbeck and Gillies, who were in town but elected not to play on the links. This was the first tournament that lias j heen held at the new links, which were in fairlv good order, with the exception of two "or three holes, where the grass is rather long. This, however, is not to be wondered at, considering the beautiful growing weather we have experienced 'lately, and the fact that Easter has arrived this year at an unusually early date. Visitors v,-ero charmed with the view from the golf house, and players were most eulogistic of the whole course. Mr. J. Pa ton. the secretary, was as usual indefatigable in his | attention to his duties. The qualifying j round of 30 holes in the championship j was plaved on Saturday, also the medal ' handicap of 30 holes. Some good scores I were registered, but the strangeness of I the links evidently affected the play of I many. j The handicap was annexed by J. Power, with gross 191. handicap 22, net | 100. W. Seifert running a close second I with ISO —10—170.

Five teams entered for the teams match, but in each team one or more' members did not complete the course, and the match was therefore declared off. The following are the principal scores:

Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the morning of tl(e second day's play, though in the afternoon a slight westerly hreeze inconvenienced some of the players. The course has improved materially. and is in much better condition now for play. There was a very large crowd of spectators present during the afternoon. This morning the committee is arranging for a suggestion hox, in which they will he pleased if visitors or others would kindly place suggestions for improving the conditions of play at the links.
