FEARFUL FIRE
HOTEL, A DEATH-TRAP. New York. March "2. A fearful fire occurred at Omaha. Nebraska. yesterday, as a result of which at least 20 people lost their lives. The blaze destroyed the TTotel Dewey, damage to the extent of CTO.OOO being done." Inside the building were .">0 guests, who had registered, and -10 other people. The ilames were first noticed at five o'clock in the morning, and they were -wift and terrible in their onslaught upon the inflammable walls and floors. Very few of those who were asleep managed to get out. It was impossible to use the fire escapes. One man was killed by jumping from a thiul slnrev window. Women were heard screamintr in awful agony, and one lireman who rushed out of the lower floor just as the girders fell said that he saw unconscious bodies lying about the floor of the hall.
The tottering walls temporarily stopped the fire-lighters, but by eight o'clock the flames had been subdued. lietween 20 and •'!■> people perished in the tire'. The exact number cannot be obtained.
