INGLEWOOD NEWS.

THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Horticultural Miow, which was I favoured with splendid weather on Wed nesday, must he regarded as a complete si:cees a . the entries constituting a record. Owing to the early nature of the season the flower classes suffered slightly ■but tbj farm and garden section profited thereby; the roots especially being a very ine sample. Pumpkins, mallows, etc., were present in good numbers, and the cabbages naturally were very large slid well grown. Onions also were exceptionally good. In this department Attention was attracted by an enormous toadstool grown at Te Roti. forming a unique exhibit. The cut blooms rtere uniformly good,, ■and social mention must be made of Mr. Davis's (Stratford) exhibit of cac_lus dahlias, which are quite new and of -very large size. Mrs. James (also of 'Stratford) was again to the front with a verv beautiful stand of sweet peas, mostlv novelties. The floral designs showed a great advance on previous vears, both in quality and quantity, and the juvenile classes 'were well patronis-

ed. A record entrv for decorated mantel

pieces re-ulted in some beautiful de- * signs, but backgrounds were perhaps oil the dark side for providing the best effects. The pot plant- were not quite so good as in previous years, but a very fine show for exhibition only by Mr. J. C. Rowe attracted the visitor's eye on entering this department. Turning to the homo industries, the cooking classes provided feast for the eve, local exhibitors being well to the Tore in the more solid departments. Stratford (Miss James) being prominent in the lighter fancy section. The butter entries looked well, and

the wines, jams, and preserves also provided a good show. Some very nice bacon, poultry, and eggs were also on view. The Ingle wood Technical School had a nice exhibit in this room.

In photography and painting some jeally artistic work was shown, including nome exceptonally well treated portrait work bv a local lady. The fancy work this year reached a very high standard, and had the advantage of more room and better light. This class was, as usual, the centre of attraction amongst the ladies, and well deserved their attention. Perhaps the school exhibits were not so numerous as in past years, but what they larked in quantity was more than counter-bal-anced bv the excellence of the work shown. Special mention must be made of a very interesting collection of Fiji and South Sea I -1 1 1u 1 curios kind! y lent by Mrs. Sutherland and .Mrs. Wheeler, which greatly added to the attractiveness of the show, and the exhibits of the nur-eryinen were also extremely helpful in forming a part of the best horticultural display that we have seen here for some time past . A good selection of music bv the local orchestra was another attraction during the evening, and of course the inevitable guessing competitions helped to pioude gome excitement. A very complete and well arranged tea room was well patronised in addition, and the Society ma\ well be complimented on their good jmlgment in securing -neb a central ami suitable location, and their good management in all departments. The secretary (Mr. \Y. 11. Humphrey) might have been at the game for years for every detail was attended to. and no hitches of any kind occurred to mar the success of the function.
